Rubellite

COLOR:

Similar in appearance to the ruby, rubellite is dark pink to red. Its hue can change when viewed from different directions.

HISTORY:

Rubellite tourmalines in the 17th century Russian Crown Jewels were originally thought to be rubies. In the early 1900s, rubellite mined in the U.S. was a favorite of the Dowager Empress of China.

USE IN JEWELRY:

Suitable for all types of jewelry designs.

MOHS HARDNESS:

7-7.5 (1 softest to 10 hardest)

COMMON TREATMENTS:

Sometimes heat-treated to improve color.

CARE:

Clean by rinsing in warm water and drying with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners should be avoided.
