History:
Ancient Romans called opal the Queen of Gems. More recently, in 2008, NASA’s explorations of Mars revealed the presence of opal on that planet.
Use in jewelry:
Because it's soft and brittle, opal jewelry should be treated gently. To make the most of the internal play of color, cabochon cuts are popular.
Mohs hardness:
5.5-6.5 (1 softest to 10 hardest).
Known treatments:
Permeation with colorless wax, oil, plastic and hardeners to improve appearance and durability. All treatments must be disclosed.
Care:
Wipe with a soft cloth.
