The Winter Blues

It’s a real thing, everyone’s mood could use a boost in the winter. Maybe a new piece of jewelry is what you need.

Once the holiday decorations and finery are put away and we stare into the long winter still ahead, it’s easy to get a little down. It happens. Even if you don’t live in a place where wind-whipped snow drifts against your doorstep, it can still be a dreary season.

One way to fight the winter blues is to do something nice for yourself. You deserve a little pick-me-up. Especially if you didn’t get what you wanted for the holidays, buy yourself the perfect jewelry present.

Snow and ice

Embrace the season with cool blues and icy whites evoking a clear sky and snowy landscape. Look to sapphire, topaz and tanzanite for a range of blues from the almost-violet you see at twilight to the pale blue visible just before sunrise. Accent these blue gems with white diamonds set in white gold, platinum or sterling silver for a brilliant play on the ice and snow.

Fireside cozy

Maybe you’re tired of the chill and just need to warm up. Look to the warm reds and oranges you might see in the flickering flames in your fireplace. Could there be a more perfect choice right now than a fire opal? Other red and orange gems to look for include rubellite, garnet and ruby. Set them in warm colors of gold — yellow and rose.

Dreaming of spring

Sometimes the only way to get through the doldrums of deep winter is to think ahead to spring and summer. Wear sunny yellow and grassy greens to get you into a warmer state of mind.

Yellow gems like citrine, yellow topaz and even yellow diamonds will bring back the sun’s warmth when you need it. Go green on its own or mix with yellow gems for a decidedly springlike feel. Look for emerald, peridot, green tourmaline or green garnets. Set yellow gems with yellow or rose gold, while green gems will pop in white metals. To really make spring hurry up, look to nature motifs like flowers to give you hope that winter will melt away soon.
