History:

Associated with royalty due to its color. Was once highly regarded among precious stones like ruby and emerald, but discoveries of huge amethyst deposits since the 1800's have made it fairly inexpensive. It’s also credited with warding off intoxication.

Use in jewelry:

Used extensively in both high-end and mainstream jewelry. Versatile due to variety in color, size and price point.

Common treatments:

Heat treatments are sometimes used to change color. All treatments must be disclosed.

Care:

Clean with warm water and mild soap. Do not steam clean.
